SAIC: China's total trademark applications expected to reach 5 million in 2017

On September 2, it is learned from the 2017 China Trademark Festival High-level Forum, in the first half of 2017, China's trademark applications totaled 2.27 million, an increase of 30.81% over the same period of last year. It is expected that the total number this year will reach 5 million.
Themed as "Trademark & Brand Protection–Innovation, Sharing and Development", the 2017 China Trademark Festival was held in the city of Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Liu Junchen, Deputy Head of SAIC said at the high-level forum that the Chinese government attached great importance to trademark and brand by proposing that property protection, in particular intellectual property protection, is an important part for the building a sound environment. In recent years, China's authorities for industry and commerce and for market supervision seize the opportunity of the business system reform to deepen and promote the trademark reform, strengthen IPR protection so that the whole society keeps improving its awareness about trademark and brands and the volume of trademark applications are growing rapidly. As of June this year, the number of valid registered trademarks in Mainland of China had reached 53.45 million, equivalent to that every seven market entities hold one registered trademark.
Starting from 2005, China has been ranking the first in the Madrid system with 22,314 applications. China has kept internationalizing its corporate brands at an accelerated pace, resulting in its trademark applications overseas on the rise rapidly. Statistics show that the trademark applications of Chinese enterprises in other countries have totaled over 300,000.
Liu Junchen added that China's industrial and commercial sectors kept strengthening trademark protection. In 2016, the market supervision authorities for industry and commerce nationwide handled 28,000 cases about various trademark-related infringements and violations, involving the value of RMB 350 million. In the first half of this year, 130,000 law-violating trademark-related cases were handled at a value of RMB 140 million.
