Guizhou aviation business reaching out internationally

The Aviation Technology Development Co (GATD), in Guizhou province in southern China,, has come out on top in a bidding war over aviation forgings for the US's General Electric Co., the world's largest aircraft engine manufacturer, and in a recent tender for Leading Edge Aviataion Propulsion (LEAP) jet engines, got 64 projects, almost 44 percent of the total, with a bid of 900 million yuan ($144.9 million).

The company, founded in 2006 in the city of Guiyang's National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, specializes in technology research and manufacturing, mainly for aviation, aerospace, weapons, green energy and high-speed railways, and is the only private enterprise approved for military production. The provincial science and technology department says that this successful bid broke a foreign manufacturer monopoly on these jet engine forgings for civil aviation, making GATD a global aviation manufacturer.

Some of GATD's techniques are leaders in China's forging industry and even abroad and it has joined the provincial government's first group of innovative enterprises. It has been putting 5 percent of revenues into R&D every year, and in 2011 alone, put more than 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) into R&D, or 11 percent of total revenues. It has 20.4 percent of its employees in research and has a special station for academics and experts and has been receiving support from eight key R&D institutes, such as Beijing's Institute of Aeronautical Materials, for greater forging technology theory and applications.

GATD holds 54 patents, and expects to add 10 to 15 annually, and, according to its director, Liu Chaohui,"Going global means a lot to our company and to Guizhou province and we'll take this opportunity to make aviation forgings a Guizhou landmark," who then added that thanks to their forgings, they expect to help develop related industries, including smelting, machining, packaging, and logistics to form an industrial cluster.
